The boat to take us back to Sihanoukville harbour was due to leave Koh Rong at 10:30 am. Once again, we walked along the beach to the pier in the rain. Our suitcases followed by boat, and here’s an important tip for anyone with Trunki children’s suitcases: Maria Rita’s suitcase took on quite a lot of water during the journey.
People kept arriving at the pier, and I could only think (and hope) that there would be more than one boat for all the people. That didn’t happen, and we all ended up crammed into a single boat. Some people had to stand, and the plastic curtains on the boat were pulled down because of the rain. It was the perfect setting for a vomit fest! I tried not to look around because I was also feeling queasy. Maria Rita, who had never been seasick before, was looking increasingly pale, and I was desperate for us to reach our destination. The 45-minute boat ride finally passed, and we managed to make it without getting sick! Yay! However, my nausea continued for several hours after we disembarked
On arrival at the port in Sihanoukville, our driver (arranged by the hotel on Koh Rong) was waiting to take us to Phnom Penh airport, some 200 km away. The journey took about two and a half hours on a motorway that was opened less than a year ago and was practically empty.
At the airport, we still had to wait several hours for our flight back to Singapore, but once we were on the plane, time flew by as we once again had meals and in-flight entertainment with Singapore Airlines! I even managed to finish the film I had started watching on the flight to Siem Reap, “The Dressmaker.”
Don’t miss the post with all the details about the hotel where we stayed in Koh Rong.
