Hotel in Malacca / Melaka

Tips on where to stay in Malacca, Malaysia, to make the most of your visit to the city.

In Malacca, we stayed at the Baba House Melaka (book here), and I must admit was a little apprehensive because I had read in reviews that the room didn’t have a window. Nevertheless, I took a chance because it seemed to be good value for money. I was surprised to find that the rooms did indeed have a window, and even though it faced an inner courtyard, it let in fresh air and some light. The bathrooms also had a window overlooking a sort of courtyard that allowed in plenty of light.

Having said that, Baba House Melaka is a safe choice, superbly located within easy walking distance of the city’s main tourist attractions, such as Jonker Street, Malacca River Cruise, A’Famosa, and more.

The hotel is also a historical building that has been preserved while maintaining the architecture and culture of Peranakan heritage. Just for this reason alone, it’s worth a visit. Click here to learn more about Peranakan Heritage in Malacca.

During our stay at the hotel, an artist was painting a huge mural on a multi-story wall in one of the inner courtyards of the hotel. From what little you can see of the picture below, it looks like it will be well worth seeing once it’s completed.

Malacca

The only drawback I found with the hotel was the breakfast, which could be improved, especially because the hotel receives large groups of tourists, and if by chance everyone goes for breakfast at the same time, you might end up without a table near the buffet and with even fewer options as some of the food that ran out was not replenished.

This hotel was also once a Peranakan house that has been preserved and restored. It was part of a trishaw tour we took, so even if you don’t stay here, it’s worth a visit.

In the hotel lobby, you can admire well-preserved Peranakan furniture and crockery, and the hotel also has a large courtyard that you wouldn’t believe from the outside.
