Depending on where you’re staying along the beaches of Phuket, it’s possible to visit the city centre in a day without staying overnight.
As we were staying in Khao Lak, quite a distance from the centre of Phuket and the Elephant Sanctuary we wanted to visit, we decided to spend a night in Phuket’s old town, which I also wanted to explore.
Here are some hotel recommendations in Phuket’s old town. The first is where we stayed, and the following are based on reviews I’ve read:
The hotel building is very charming and has an excellent location, right in the heart of Phuket’s main streets. The Booking.com ratings seem a bit exaggerated, but for the price it’s a good choice for first time visitors wanting to explore the city. Would I stay here again? Hummmm, maybe not, as I’d probably try a different hotel next time, but for a first visit it works well. The basic room we booked was simple but decent for a night’s stay.
The highlight of the hotel was definitely the location and the staff who were very helpful. On the day we returned to Singapore, the street in front of the hotel was closed for a street market, and the receptionist kindly escorted us to meet the taxi driver, who was further away due to the street closure.
I booked the room with breakfast as Maria Rita tends to get impatient for food in the morning, but I recommend having breakfast at one of the many nearby cafes that look fantastic. The hotel breakfast is very basic and frankly not worth it.

This very central hotel was built in the Sino-Portuguese style. Although I haven’t stayed here, it seems to be a similar option to the Casa Blanca Hotel, with very good reviews. However, some people mention that it can be a bit noisy as the soundproofing isn’t the best.
An interesting fact about this hotel is that it gained worldwide fame after appearing in one of the opening scenes of the film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
I leave this suggestion for those who are looking for a four star stay in the centre of Phuket and are willing to spend a bit more. Although it’s not right in the heart of the city, it’s within a 15 minute walk to the centre of Phuket.
The reviews are excellent, so it really does seem to be an option worth considering.
If you’re looking for an option in the middle of the price range, between the three-star hotels mentioned first and the previous four-star hotel, this is a good choice. It’s a little further from the centre, but still within easy walking distance.
