Shopping in Malacca

Tips for the best shopping when visiting Malacca, Malaysia.

Hueman Studio

This was one of my favourite shops in Malacca. It has souvenirs, home decor, and local crafts that would look great in any home.

It’s right next to the hotel where we stayed in Malacca. See post Hotel in Malacca for more details.

Orangutan House

Orangutan House is a studio/gallery owned by the artist Charles Cham, and you can also find unique T-shirts for a more original souvenir.

Jonker Street Night Market

The Jonker Street night market, also mentioned in the posts Things to do in Malacca and Where to eat in Malacca, is truly a must-visit. The market starts from 6pm to midnight, from Friday to Sunday, with fewer stalls on Sundays compared to the other days.

Here, you can find a wide variety of souvenirs, clothing, toys, jewellery, accessories, and, of course, plenty of local delicacies.

Throughout the historic centre of Malacca, you’ll find several small galleries with really beautiful items, from oil paintings to engravings and acrylics. Even if you’re not looking to buy anything, it’s worth seeing these galleries.

In addition to the galleries scattered around the city, there are also many souvenir shops, especially on the street where the Jonker Street night market takes place, Jalan Hang Jebat, which you can visit during the day as well. Here, you can find Peranakan-style porcelain pieces, such as colourful tea sets.

In the streets of Malacca old town, you can also find the famous “kasut manek” for sale, the shoes used in the traditional Nyonya costume worn by Peranakan women. The “Kasut manek” are made of beads and are a symbol of Peranakan culture. For more details see the Peranakan Culture in Malacca post.
